Amara's Law

Short term thinking vs Long term results Human nature is a funny thing, and we are pretty bad judges when it comes to forecasting the benefits and progress we can make over an extended period of time.

This can be all summarised by the late scientist and futurist Roy Amara, he coined Amara's Law which states "We tend to overestimate the effect of things in the short term and underestimate the effect in the long run".

Originally referring to technology, this law perfectly captures many concepts and short-sighted beliefs in the health arena. Whether it be going to the gym, dieting, meditating or (insert any new healthy habit here!).

Chiropractic care is no difference. People come with the expectations their pain (regardless of how long it has been present) will quickly disappear. While indeed symptoms can sometimes 'magically disappear' quickly with chiropractic, this however can often be the worst thing to happen as we then incorrectly believe chiropractic has 'fixed' us, and we can stop with care. But if we stop the care at this point, when our symptoms disappear, we are missing the biggest benefit that our bodies can receive from chiropractic. The lack of pain does not mean we are healthy, and at the same time our bodies doing not stop healing when our pain stops.

Removing pain and symptoms is a very important first step in chiropractic care, but it is just that, the first step. Allowing your body to heal and restore whilst maintaining correct spinal biomechanics is where the longer term and more substantial health and lifestyle benefits of chiropractic come from.

So please give your body the time it deserves to gain the full benefits from any endeavour that you decide is right for you. You will be pleasantly surprised and thoroughly rewarded!
